I wanted to share a podcast where I am a guest instead of the host that I think you will enjoy. Toby is a top coach in Australia and we had a great time discussing a variety of topics. In this conversation we cover how I got the nickname and my brand, The Golf Guru as well as my work with PGA Tour player, Will McGirt with a bunch of putting information. We also talk about the online short game debate and my take on it as well as some key elements and how I teach short game shots and much more. I hope you enjoy. I will post the audio version on my podcast platforms as well.
I am so excited to have my next guest on the show as it is Performance Consultant, Dr. Raymond Prior. Raymond Prior, Ph.D. is one of the most sought-after names in performance psychology by the world’s best performers. His clients include Major Champions, World Champions, Olympic Gold Medalists, individual and team National Champions, National Coach of the Year Award winners, individual and team Conference Champions, and countless NCAA All-Americans. Dr. Prior also works with corporate executives and other non-sport performers including Grammy winners, Oscar winners, Tony winners, and Emmy winners performing on stage and screen.Dr. Prior is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant by the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. As an author and researcher, Dr. Prior has authored books, contributed chapters to several performance psychology textbooks, and published research in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology.I have followed Dr. Priors work for a few years, read his book and have listened to his podcast that he co-hosts with Chase Cooper and his information just spoke to me in a way that made sense to me as a coach which is why I was so thrilled to get to talk to him. Dr. Prior works with a bunch of PGA and LPGA tour players so I selfishly wanted to pick his brain on a few case studies so I could help my players and I know it will help you. In this conversation we cover many topics which include how to build stable confidence to some of the pitfalls that players run into while trying to perform their best. He also gives some great advice to junior golfers and their parents that you don’t want to miss as well as some daily habits like mindfulness meditation training and cold plunging and more importantly the science and research behind it that will give you some tools to do what he calls “play freely. So without further delay, I bring you the brilliant Dr. Raymond Prior…enjoy!
My guest on this episode needs no introduction as he is a legend in the game and one of my childhood heroes. He is 14 time PGA Tour winner, including the 1983 PGA Champion where he beat Jack Nicklaus buy 1 and the 1983 and 2000 Players champion where he held off Tiger Woods and you guessed it, the owner of one of the most famous golf lines after hitting his second shot into the 18th green…..”Be the right club. Be the right club today” He was the 1983 leading money winner and player of the year and also the comback player of the year in 1994. He played on 4 Ryder Cups and was the captain of the 2004 American squad…. You guessed it I am talking about Mr. Hal Sutton. Its also worth mentioning that he was the recipient of the 2007 Payne Stewart award. So I thought as the Ryder cup approaches, who better to talk to than someone who lived it. We had an amazing discussion that included his father’s influence on his life and some of the decisions that he made to how he dealt with the low points and adversity in his career to much more. This is one of the few times that I have been nervous before going into an interview because I have so much respect for Hal, his career and how lives his life and his contributions to the game so give me some grace on this one. We didn’t get to half of the topics and questions that I had prepared so hopefully there will be a part 2 but It was an honor to sit down with the legend. This conversation is filled with so many great stories and life lessons that you can apply to your life and golf. So without further delay, here is Hal Sutton…enjoy!
Welcome to another episode of the Golf Guru show, I am your host Jason Sutton where it is my mission to break down high performers in the teaching and coaching business, tease out there daily habits and how they train there players to perform at the highest level. My guest on this show needs no introduction as it is my good friend Mr. John Dunigan. John is a Golf Magazine Top 100 and Top 50 Golf Digest coach that is an expert in motor learning science. He partnered with Dr. Will Wu to create one of the best motor learning courses and platforms call the Skilled Coaches Alliance which I highly recommend you check out. Now they have created a practice app to support their program. This is part 1 of our conversation where we discuss how we coach both of our kids, his daughter which is a college golfer and my son who you all know just turned pro. How we navigate and separate our roles as parents and coach which could be helpful for you coaches out there with kids working through junior golf and college. We also discuss ways that you can get your students to move differently and change motor patters using his techniques. There is so many learning moments in this very wide ranging conversation that you don’t want to miss. Part 2 will focus more on the application as we dig into a few of John’s recent lessons and and case studies and hypothetical senerios that we face everyday with your players. After you download the audio you will want to check out video on my youtube channel as John demonstrates these movements. Make sure you download and subscribe to the podcast and please share.
