The Guru On “Titleist Fitters Forum” – My Golf Channel Experience

A few months ago, I was approached by my Titleist rep and was asked to do a few shows on the Golf Channel called “The Titleist Fitters Forum.” I kindly accepted and wanted to share my first episode and a few thoughts on the experience. I did 4 shows total which included the first ever putter fitting segment which I am proud of. For those of you who follow me know that I have been really focusing on becoming a more knowledgeable and proficient putting coach so I look forward to seeing how it came out. The Titleist and Golf Channel people couldn’t have been nicer and more professional. With all the high tech equipment, cameras, lighting and staging of the sets, I took a lot of mental notes that I will put into action as I do my little Carmel Golf Academy TV show for the members at Carmel. I hope you enjoy this short segment and I will post the upcoming shows as they are presented to me. Thanks for all the kind tweets, emails and facebook messages from everyone who saw it on the Golf Channel

My Day With a Short Game Master

Every year as I compose my goals for my life and career,  I also update a list that I started about 15 years ago called my life list. A bucket list of sorts that included things that I wanted to do in my career. Several of them involve working with other top coaches. If you want to be at the top of your profession or field like I want to someday be, you must get around people who you admire or that have accomplished similar things that you aspire to do. Tony Robbins calls this modeling. I call this building relationships that will make you better with like-minded people. Today I am glad to say that I  can mark one of those items off of my list as I got to spend the day coaching with one of the best short game coaches in the world. Mr. Todd Sones (@toddsones). I have been fortunate in the last few years to build a relationship with Mr. Sones as he has kind of taken me under his wing and mentored me in many areas of the teaching business and life. So when he emailed my boss and asked if he could come to our golf school and partner with me and do a scoring game school I was very excited. An opportunity like this does not come along very often for me to work alongside a top 50 teacher and observe how he works with average players. I assembled 8 of my students to experience working with myself and Mr. Sones for a great day of learning about putting and the short game. We started off with a presentation about Todd’s philosophy and what the students should expect for the day which I recorded for your viewing pleasure (pending). I wish I would have had someone video the whole thing because I couldn’t process everything that I was witnessing as I was trying to teach and also follow behind my mentor as we went through each student.

We started with putting for the majority of the morning which included a set of stations for the students to work (drills and practice) as I filtered each student to Todd to assess and also fit for a coutour putter which is Mr. Sones putter company where he can build high quality putters that fit the student properly. Getting students into proper posture and then fitting them is the only way to go. Out of 8 students, only 2 of them had putters that were even close to what would allow them to putt to their potential and one had been fit by me. Needless to say, once we put putters into their hands and they could see the results immediately…..they all bought new putters. The great thing about Todd is that he has that ability to help the students and also educate other teachers as well. Myself along with some other staff members and one PGA pro who drove in from Virginia, were privy to observe and pick the brain of one of the best as he did his work. I had seen Todd present his philosophy many times and had many conversations with him about teaching putting but until you see a guy work one on one with a student, you just don’t get the full effect. To see how he could make simple adjustments to their setup, explain it to the student and have them understand it and implement it quickly was great to see. After 3 hours of putting instruction, the students were all able to tell us what we had worked on and how they will practice their changes which I feel is the true sign that the student really gets it.

We ended the last couple of hours by working on shots from the edge of the green and back to about 40 yards which is so crucial in the scoring zone. Mr. Sones believes, as do I, that the terms “pitch” and “chip” are terms that don’t fully describe short game shots. These terms are often misused and confuse the average golfer. So the cool thing about what he teaches is the different language that he uses for each shot. We taught the students these shots:

1. bump and run – short shot played with a putting grip and stance (pw, 8iron)

2. bump and spin – same shot only played with a sand wedge to spin it

3. hinge and hold – played from the rough using an early hinge action to create a steeper angle of approach

4. low toss shot  – 25 yards off the green

5. high toss shot – same shot with a higher trajectory

He uses a different way of getting into setup which start by setting the club for the shot at hand and then “standing to the handle” which positions the butt of the club in the middle of your body. This sets the proper ball position without even mentioning it which is one less thing for the student to think about.

Mr. Sones says” A good short game can be summed up in one word, “descend!” and a poor short game can be described as “ASCEND.”

There were plenty more nuggets that I picked up as we talked in between and after the session that I will have to share later or you will just have to hit me up on twitter or come and take a short game lesson. Better yet, come out and get fit for a Coutour putter that will help me teach you better.

Because today I am a better coach than I was yesterday and that is what it is all about…..Am I Right? I can’t believe that I get paid to do this. Thanks for reading my blog and share this with someone who needs help with their short game. You can find me at the Dana Rader Golf School on the both sides of the building….not just the range.  or on twitter @twitter.com/golfgurutv

This year, make your lesson plan include at least 50 percent short game and putting and you will thank me later.

*****Special thanks  to my friend Todd Sones for a great day and sharing his knowledge with me and my students.

See you on the lesson tee,

Jason

TrackmanTour Numbers and The Importance of an Expert Fitter

Club fitting has always been a high priority for me as a teacher. An expert fitter has the ability to make the teacher look like a genius by giving the student a tool that fits him or her and allowing them to reach their golfing potential. At the Dana Rader Golf School, we have one of the best fitters in the country in Stan Roach. He not only is extremely knowledgeable but blends a customer service touch that is second to none. Spending time with Stan is like hanging out with Harvey Penick. He hands you a few clubs, makes a recommendation or two and the next thing you know you are striping it like never before. You leave the a session with Stan and wonder “what just happened”. His style is so smooth and effortless, that he just slips it in your food……to steal a line from Harvey. As we say in the teaching business, Stan understands the club fitting business like Homer (Kelley) and explains it like Harvey (Penick). I couldn’t do my job as well if I didn’t have Stan supplying my students with clubs that work for their build and swing. If you are trying to improve your game and are playing clubs off of the rack or hand me downs, you may as well run a marathon with shoes two sizes too small. Stan uses the Zelocity launch monitor to fit players which gives you plenty of data and information. Come and spend some time with Stan before purchasing golf clubs and I promise you won’t be sorry. Here is trackmans data for tour players that might give you some insight when you visit your club fitter. For more info, check out trackman.com.  This is the only way to maximize you distance and play what is going to work for you. Check out Stan’s Blog for the latest in equipment and fitting info at clubfitterstan.wordpress.com.

Time To Get Your Groove On

With all the talk this weekend about” Groovegate” and some professional golfers getting called cheaters, I thought I would weigh in on this new groove situation. Do you understand the rule? What is this loophole that Ping is involved in? What does all this mean for the recreational golfer. I will attempt to answer all of these questions as I see it and help to simplify it for all of you players out there in Guru Nation. First off, The new grooves essentially cut down on the amount of spin that a player can create out of the rough. This will put a premium on straighter driving rather than the old “Bomb and Gouge.” The new condition of Competition concerning grooves applies to play on the professional tours and a small selection of other elite tournaments in 2010. For the vast majority of the golf played around the globe, the grooves in your current clubs are authorized by the ruling bodies until at least 2024. So unless you are reading this and are playing a professional tour, you can relax for a bit longer.

THE LOOP HOLE– As you probably already know, The Ping Eye 2 wedges before 1990, are considered legal because of the box groove law suit won be Karsten in 89′. This is what some of the pros have in their bags (namely Mickelson) because they are considered legal for the time being. I think that Mr. Karsten should just go ahead and write the letter allowing the USGA to make these illegal as well, just my opinion (and apparently Johnny Miller as well). Make it equal across the board and lets see who is the best. It was nice to see that Scott Macarron did apologize to Phil about calling him a cheater for using this wedge. He is not using it this week however. It will be interesting to see if and how this changes the game. One thing is for sure, we will see the pros working on there short  game and their driving. Here is a picture of the difference in the old and the new grooves to give you a better understanding of what we are dealing with. See you on the lesson tee and oh, don’t forget to breathe.

God Bless,

Guru

P.G.A. Show New Product Review

I have had a few days to review and discuss what myself and my colleagues liked at the show. I have been going to the show for about the last 10 years and it has definitely changed in the fact that some of the companies have pulled out but there was still quite a buzz and excitement about new products and a new golf season. Here are a few things that I thought were worth looking at and the sites where you can find them. I will be purchasing a few of these to try with my students this season.
1. eyelinegolf.com– great putting and training aids. I liked the Hank Haney impact putting system, the dual plane putting system and the impact putting ball.
2. pivotpro.net – interesting aid for swayers and pivot problems
3. flightscope.com – a 3d doppler radar system (like trackman) but half the price.
4. K-vest.com – I thought the k trainer- The most intuitive training system in golf, from the developers of the k-vest. k vest is awesome but not new.
5. pro-stance.com – helps you improve your dynamic balance
6. morodz.com – great alignment aids for ball position as well

*****golfaroundtheworld.com – a site where we get most of our training aids. For all my students that ask me “where did you get that”

For those of you that haven’t been to the show, you need to go at least once. Your pro at your club can get guest passes. Here is a small taste of what you will see and a portion of a TPI seminar that is very good. Please excuse the camera work as it is not easy to walk and film. Click the link below to view the film

P.G.A. Show Update

Welcome to my first away game post. I am coming to you from the Orlando Airport as I wait on my flight back to Charlotte. It is now about 60 degrees and it looks like it is about 25 in Charlotte. It was a very productive show but I am looking forward to getting back to my family that I miss very much. I don’t do a lot of traveling so it makes it tough when they can’t make the trip. The show was enormous as usual with most of the major companies represented (aside from Nike equipment). There were lots of gadgets and toys to observe and new technology that can be used to enhance your ability to learn this great game. I wouldn’t say that there was one thing that blew me away but I did leave with a few interesting training aid ideas for the upcoming season. I attended several seminars, acquired some new information and caught up with old friends to exchange ideas.  I took some video of some of the things that I saw and will hopefully have that ready to post in a few days. The highlight for me (as always), is the Golf Magazine Top 100 party where I get to mingle with the games greatest teachers and meet legends in our industry. Seymour Dunn was inducted into the hall of fame. It was hosted by Peter Kessler (whom I met for the first time and will be a guest on his radio show in few weeks), so that was exciting. I met legends like Bob Toski and Phil Ritson and caught up with old friends. What I can tell you about the golf industry is that I feel it is on the way back. It will rebound but we have a ways to go. I will try to do my part by continuing to grow the game one student at a time. Check back in to see video and more insight from the PGA show from the guru.

What’s In The Bag of The Guru?

Callaway Golf Staff Member

I am often asked,”Guru, what kind of clubs are you playing this year?” I thought that I would give everyone a look inside my golf bag. I have been a Callaway Staff Member for many years and my outstanding sales rep, Tim Garrett, keeps me in the latest technology. So here is a sneak peak of my equipment:

Driver: FT 9 10 degree with a V2 shaft

3wood: Diablo neutral 15 degree

Hybrids: 2(18 deg. & 21 deg. )…….If you don’t have at least one hybrid in your bag, you are giving the field 2 shots

Irons: 4 – PW :Callaway X forged with flighted 6.0 rifle shafts (best irons Callaway has put out )

Wedges: 54 deg bent to a 52  and 58 deg. X (unfinished)

Putter: Coutour mallet style custom putter (Fit by Todd Sones) 65 gram weight 331/4 length

Ball: Callaway Tour ix with guru on the side

Whatever equipment you decide to play, make sure you get fitted by an expert fitter. At the Dana Rader Golf School, we have the best in Mr. Stan Roach. Without Stan I would not be able to help my students as much as I do. You wouldn’t run a marathon in shoes that were too small, right.

See you on the lesson tee,

Guru
